I love Twitter. I check it every morning over breakfast, and at spare moments throughout the day. If you’re unfamiliar with the phenomenon, Twitter.com is Internet social media at it’s simplest– yet most profound. After a simple free registration, you have a page. You can then choose to “follow” other users and they follow you. At any time, you can leave a 140 character message describing something you’re doing or, perhaps, passing on a link to something interesting on the web. Your messages appear on each other’s pages. You don’t have to follow someone for them to follow you, though. That’s it.
Early on, the most popular users were web celebrities like Leo Laporte (@LeoLaporte), Kevin Rose (@kevinrose) and Justine Ezarik (@ijustine). For fans, it was fun to keep up with these people on a day-to-day basis and, in turn, celebs found that tweeting had many perks. If you have hundreds or thousands of followers, you practically have your own personalized online support desk for most anything you can ask. Celebs also found the site a great way to get word out about their various appearances and activities. And they make a lot of new friends.
After Barak Obama (@BarackObama) came on and rose to the top of the follower lists (even though he wasn’t tweeting personally) during the election, Twitter changed forever. “Tweeting” has become the latest hot pastime for the coolest of the famous. Top users now include ashton kutcher (@aplusk), Jimmy Fallon (@jimmyfallon) and RainnWilson (@rainnwilson) of The Office.
It’s now easier than ever before to access your favorite stars. Rather than mailing a letter to a Hollywood studio, all you have to do is click their reply arrow and type 140 character message. However, most of these people receive so many messages that answering them all isn’t practical. Here are some tips that will increase your chances of some celebrity interaction.
Catch Them Early
Celebs are starting out on Twitter all the time. While their follow count can rise very fast, if you catch them the first few days after opening an account, there will be much less competition for their attention and you can offer some useful newbie advice. Celebs already on the site will often tip you off to new celebrity user– other fans will, too.
Sound Like a Normal Person
When messaging a famous person, don’t get all gaga about how you’ve always loved them or anything like that. They hear that all the time and it gets boring. On the other hand, don’t be rude, either. Twitter is basically a big cocktail party. Be your polite and likable self.
Be Relevant, Pay Attention, and Be Useful
This is the most important tip on the list. Most of these people receive tons of junk messages. Don’t ask dumb questions like “did it really hurt when you got shot in (movie)”. Your tweet will be most welcome in answer to a question the celebrity has asked or is in reference to something the person has just said. Get a feel for topics the celeb finds of interest and pass along a link or some information now and then (but not too often).
Be Clever/Creative/Unusual
Most celebrities are very creative people and appreciate an imaginative remark or unique insight. You don’t have to come up with it yourself, though. Mention something your best friend told you or something you read. Still, it never hurts to try and look at things from a fresh perspective.
Read Their Blog
Many tweeting celebrities also keep blogs online. Often their blogs are read by fewer people than their Twitter messages and it gives you the opportunity to leave a comment. Most everyone who writes a blog reads every comment and considers the points made in them. Once in a while, you’ll get an emailed response.
While you are not likely to make a Hollywood party guest list (although it’s possible), tweeting with celebs can make your day and give you something to brag about at the water cooler.
